I read Schalk’s “Adobe announces Open Screen Project” at DZone today. Quite amazing what Adobe is doing here. They skip the licensing of the most important protocols and file formats. These are free to use now, independent from the platform, context, whatever you like.

I've been working on improvements for this thumbnail/slideshow component. The way the continuous scroll flows is very nice. It provides a very fluid feel. I have it reading XML from SlideShowPro director. SSPD simply gives a structure of albums and images, so the component should work from essentially any XML source as long as it follows the same schema

On April 18, 2008, Adobe released its Flex SDK coding conventions and best practices. Adobe's Flex Team explained that the new conventions, “. . . lay out the coding standards for writing open-source Flex framework components in ActionScript 3 (AS3). Adhering to these standards makes the source code look consistent, well-organized, and professional.”

Creating an MP3 Player in ActionScript 3.0 is fairly straight forward. The complexity varies greatly depending on what kind of features you want your player to have. I don’t plan on getting into ID3 tags here, but otherwise (as you can see) I will be going over the full functionality of a normal MP3 Player.

the problem here is that putting such a huge file on our page will slow down the other page elements that are also trying to load at the same time. The solution then, is to ensure that the video doesn’t load until after the rest of the page is loaded.

Flare processes an SWF and extracts all scripts from it. The output is written to a single text file. Only ActionScript is extracted, no text or images. Flare is freeware. Windows, Mac OS X and Linux versions are available.

As Flash’s strength is in UI development and Java’s strength is in services, security and distribution, lots of Java developers are adopting the Flash as their UI choice. When it comes Java ME development, its an application sitting on the mobile phones as opposed to traditional web application where the browser and server are involved. Until now, Java ME developers have only Java ME GUI APIs for UI development, but now they can enhance the UI with Flash technology. In an interesting turn of events, Sony Ericsson launching project Capuchin, which bridges the Java ME with Flash Lite by empowering these two distinct developer communities to bring their respective expertise to create more powerful mobile applications.

In a well timed move today Adobe announced the Open Screen Project and lifted restrictions on the use of Flash related specifications. The initiative is supported by several industry leaders including ARM, Intel, LG, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, and Verizon. Notably absent from the list were Google and Apple, creators of the Android and iPhone platforms respectively.

Adobe's announcement of the open screen project is the biggest announcement for the world of RIA today. Pretty much every player in the mobile market, with the exception of Apple, seems to be supporting this effort.

I've been enthusiastically telling fellow Java developers about the many benefits of using Flex with Java EE back-ends in recent months. As part of this effort, I have presented on the benefits of Flex at conferences and a common question at the conferences and in person when talking with developers is "What is the difference between Flex 2 and Flex 3?" This is a bigger question than I can hope to answer, but I will document the differences that are most important to me in this blog entry.
